New Multitudes | Jay Farrar, Will Johnson, Anders Parker, and Yim Yames

There’s been a more than a few of theres Woody Guthrie tributes in recent years and they’re usually pretty good but in my opinion New Multitudes is the top of the heap.   Well, to be honest I haven’t really listened to most of the other ones… but I’m still pretty confident in that statement.  It was released on what would have been Guthrie’s 100th birthday and it’s pretty fucking good.  You put Jay Farrar, Jim James and a couple of guitars in a room and you’re going to end up with some real shit.  Throw in some unused Woody Guthrie lyrics and that’s some really fucking real shit.  I didn’t know who Will Johnson and Anders Parker where before I got this album but they hold their own with Farrar and James and that’s no small feat.  For those not in the know, James is the front man of My Morning Jacket and Farrar is one of the founding members of Uncle Tupelo and after that Son Volt.

Anyways, New Multitudes is a nice collection of country tinged folk songs and straight up rocking jams.  It feels a bit laid back at first glance but once you really dig into it there’s some heavy shit in there.  Do yourself a favor and get the extended addition, you won’t regret it.
