Futurebirds / Cardillo at Ortlieb’s in Philly

So two weeks ago on Thursday I saw Futurebirds at Ortlieb’s and as I’ve mentioned before I love these guys. They’ve got a little bit of everything I like; rock, alt-country, pedal steel, psychedelic break-downs and lyrics that may or may not reference the seminal Keanu Reaves film Point Break. I also love Ortlieb’s, however I wasen’t really sure what to expect going into this one. It’s a small stage, a small room and there’s 6 dudes in this band. They’ve got a lot of shit going on and it seemed like the potential for everything to sound like a massive, electric wall of noise would be pretty high in a room the size of Ortlieb’s. I was pleasantly surprised though. Everything sounded great and they ripped through a bunch of classics off of Hampton’s Lullaby and quite a bit of newer stuff as well.

I hadn’t heard of Cardillo before but from what I gathered they’re a Philly band and they played a great set. I guess I’d describe them as having sort of a alt-country, garage rock type of thing going on. What really stuck out to to me was their lap steel player… this guy was killing it. Now I may be a bit bias towards bands with lap steel players but I’d definitely suggest checking these guys out.

There was an opening act as well, a guy by the name of Mark Lanky. Unfortunately I was eating tacos and didn’t make it in time. I’m not proud of it but what can I say… I love tacos.
