St. Paul & The Broken Bones | Half the City

Fig. 1

I have to admit I’ve never been much of a soul man (hehe) but I think I might be becoming one. I’m not sure if it’s just because I’m getting older and can no longer connect with the youth of today or up until now I’ve just been too much of an stubborn jackass appreciate it.  It’s probably a bit of both, but let’s be honest here, what passes for popular music these days seems like it’s produced mainly to serve as background noise at space orgies (see fig. 1).   Don’t get me wrong, I’d gladly attend a space orgy once a week if they where blasting out that smooth soul… but this new shit with all the dubs and the steps and the beeps and the boops is where I draw the line.

What I’m trying to get at is St. Paul & The Broken Bones are an amazing soul band.  They seem to have been getting a lot of attention lately and it’s not hard to see why.  These guys have a lot of energy and strike me as a band that is probably pretty mind exploding live.  They play with the sort of reckless abandon that you’d expect to see from whiskey swilling garage rockers, not a 6 piece soul outfit from Birmingham.   Front man, Paul Janeway has a voice that will send shivers down your spine, this dude was born to play soul.

I never imagined there would be a point in my life where I would be rocking out to a soul on the reg, but every time I’ve put on ‘Half the City’… the spirit takes me.  What else can I say? It’s a great album.

The Drink:

Whatever you’re supposed to drink when listening to soul… Brandy I guess?
