Soundset: Atmosphere

For my first real piece about the show it only seems right to start with the group that made the entire festival a possibility. Before closing out the night as the headlining act, Atmosphere was introduced by the one and only Sway who had some very kind words to share about his thoughts of the Twin Cities hip-hop scene. He also took a moment to specifically mention Rhymesayers and the direct influence the collective group as well as the Soundset music festival they were responsible for had such in incredible positive impact on the entire music scene in the area. Mad respect.

Once they hit the stage the crowd as usual for any headlining act went nuts. Both Atmospheres DJ Ant and Plain Ole Bill were to be seen in the back keeping the beats and occasional scratching up.

There were also a few guest appearances on stage with them too. Murs filled in on “Dirty girl” and Brother Ali pictured below in “Cats Van Bags” ripping it up.

Playing new tracks like “Kanye West” off their latest album Southsiders, as well as the older favorite hits like “Say Shh” it felt sort of as if they encompassed on stage where Sean started to where he was standing on stage on Sunday. The group, much like the Soundset Festival itself is aging very well. Hearing them play “God Loves Ugly” always takes me back and it is one you can hear the entire crowd singing word for word right along with Slug on stage, and the new stuff is a breath of fresh air from the albums of theirs I have had for nearly a decade. The presence the group brings to stage is one you really have to experience first hand and I highly recommend you do. If they aren’t touring near you, there is always Soundset next year!
