Microsoft shows off OneDrive, their rebranded SkyDrive replacement

In the middle of last year Microsoft found itself in some hot water in the U.K. when a court ruled that the name of their cloud storage service SkyDrive had infringed upon the BSkyB trademark owned by British Sky Broadcasting Group. While many assumed Microsoft would appeal the initial ruling and take it back to court to avoid having to change the name of their service, the two companies were able to reach a settlement with each other just a month later that would see the SkyDrive name be changed eventually. Under the new OneDrive moniker the service should be free of coming under anymore trademark fire, and the new name also plays nicely with some of the companies other products such as the Xbox One. Even though it was a forced transition, at least it worked out.

So if you see that familiar tile on your start screen showing a different name in the near future, fear not. It will still be the exact same app you have been using save for the name change. Aside cases like this where a company changes the name of a service or product due to a court order, companies also do this this willingly. When something bad happens companies often want to distance themselves from it by changing the name, or other times to draw more attention to an already existing product or freshen things up. Whatever the case may be, it shouldn’t take long for consumers to adjust to the change.
