Drunk Lyrics | Grimes

Everyone is taking about Grimes lately. I’m reading articles about how she is changing the world because sadly she’s one of the few pop stars responsible for the creative behind their music and I’m seeing shares, reviews, and general praise for her music on my social media feeds left and right. Is her music any good? Well, I have listened to some songs and it does seem solid as far as the low standards of pop music go. But if that damn liberal media didn’t brainwash me into giving her a chance, wouldn’t I just feel the same way about her as Katy Perry? I don’t know, maybe.  I mean the media convinced us there was something more substantial with Tegan & Sara’s music in the past so surely they can do it again. Dammit Grimes, I don’t trust you.

But seriously it is a little weird that a bunch of old male scribes are praising the songs of someone that their daughter or granddaughter should be dancing to. And while I might not be a parent, I might be too old to tell if Grimes is any good.  It’s troubling.  Does any of this matter if she creates her own music but it’s not any good? Also…why Grimes? Is this a commentary on how the Canadian musician is coming to America to (metaphorically) slaughter American zombies like that Brit in disguise, Rick Grimes? Is it in relation to the word Grimy, you know the young people slang version of the word Grimy? So many questions.

But since she writes her own music our way here at Empty Bottle Evenings to try to figure out the mystery of Grimes is to bear down on her lyrics.  And as someone who has recently listened to some of her songs and not understood a word of them this should be particularly fun. As with the first attempt at this exercise I will use that thing called the google to try to find out what the lyrics are when I can’t make them out myself.  Let’s get Grimey! (minus 100 points for Bake)

Track: “Realiti”

Sample Lyric: There were moments when it seemed okay (But I go back alone) / To this moment away, where do you stay? (I go back alone) / There was a time when the music would play

Oh, baby, every morning there are mountains to climb/ Taking all my time/ Oh, when I get up, this is what I see / Welcome to reality

My Drunk Interpretation: Grimes got grimed by some grimey fellow and now she’s waking up everday and missing him. Buck up kiddo, one day you’ll find the person you love and waking up will still feel like climbing a mountain because your job sucks, it’s cold out, and you’re just generally depressed. Reality sucks, stopped spelling it with that cutesy “i”.

Track: “Flesh without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream

Sample Lyric: Baby, believe me/ And you had every chance/ You destroy everything you love (Uncontrollable) / If you don’t need me/ Just let me go

My Drunk Interpretation: Hey, you know what? Sometimes guys suck. Girls too. And they don’t want to let you go because they’re pathetic and you’re the only sucker that will put up with them. They won’t let you go, so you just gotta leave. Before you are literally tearing the flesh and blood off their clingy bodies with the nearest blunt object.  Damn, she is Rick Grimes

Track: “Oblivion”

Sample Lyric: I never walk about after dark/ It’s my point of view/ Because someone could break your neck/ Coming up behind you/ Always coming and you’d never have a clue/ And now I look behind all the time/ I will wait forever/ Always looking straight/ Thinking counting all the hours you wait

See you on a dark night

My Drunk Interpretation: Grimes is fucking paranoid. Do they even have bad neighborhoods in Canada?  Calm, down.

Track: “Go” (Ft Blood Diamond)

Sample Lyric: Dreams, they feel like memories when I dream of you/ Time won’t stay, it’ll stretch itself out from a minute to days/ And I’d like to think that we don’t dream to wipe it off/ ‘Cos I’ve been here

Living up, giving up/ When I go, can I go with you, you?/ When I go, can I go with…

Go, go, go, go, go with/ Go with/ Go, go, go, go, go

My Drunk Interpretation: Grimes wants to go. I really don’t know what she is talking about but a lot of people think she’s pretty cool.

Track: “Vanessa”

Sample Lyric: Hey hey, you wanna play/ ‘Cos baby I can go and go/ And every other day you’re running off with so and so/ Well, baby I would throw you if I didn’t know you but I’m paying for it

My Drunk Interpretation: Grimes got left by a dude (or chick) for Vanessa. What the fuck makes Vanessa so special? Can she sing? Can she write music? Can she sway like the wacky waving inflatable arms flailing tube man? No. She can’t. You’re better than her Grimes. I love you.

Track: “Venus Fly” (Ft Janelle Monae)

Sample Lyric: Why you looking at me now?/ Why you looking at me again?/ What if I pulled my teeth?/ Cut my hair underneath my chin/ Wrap my curls all around the world/Throw my pearls all across the floor/ Feeling my beat like a sniper girl (Cause I want it more)

Hey, what about me?/ Oh, why you looking at me?/ Oh, why you looking at me? (Against the music)/

Hey, what about me?/ Oh, why you looking at me?/ Oh, why you looking at me? (Baby I can use it)

My Drunk Interpretation: I don’t know what it’s like to be a girl but I can imagine it sucks. Guys are always looking. Fucking creeps. You’re better off without us Grimes! I’m drunk.

Track: “Dream Fortress”

Sample Lyric: Ouuh/ Touching/ Ah/ Honey Wanna/ Ohh My Baby

Ohh My/ My Paradise/ What You Say/Honey

Ooh/ Ah Boy/Honey Wanna/ Oh My Baby/My Paradise

Aah/ My Baby/ Ohh My Mind/ Running In the Dark

My Mind Away/My Mind/Running In the Dark/ Away

My Drunk Interpretation: Those aren’t just a sample. Those are all the words in this song. Still, I can’t be sure, but I think she’s orgasming. In her sleep. Oh, to be a teen again.
