Boston Concert Picks: 7-16 to 7-19

Tonight 7/16- One Night Only – Billy Joel @ FenwayPark – 7:30pm – Not a typical recommendation and I’ll be the worst to admit “Uptown Girl” is one of the worst songs of all time.  But I’ve never seen him live before, I’ve never seen a concert at Fenway, and I’m in the mood for someone to tickle the ivories. And my butt.

Saturday 7/18 & Sunday 7/19

The Foo Fighters  @Fenway Park –  I’ve heard Dave Grohl and company called one of the last true rock bands in America. It doesn’t mean they are the best, but just that every other rock band around seems to need a sub-category like indie-rock, folk-rock, punk-rock, electronic pop masquerading as rock. Back in the days when “Everlong” was on the radio and the radio was a thing people listened to, you call call them alternative rock. Now if you use the alt moniker it’s probably a pandora station centered around Nirvana and Pearl Jam and is probably referred to by younger millenials as a brand of “classic rock”. Fucking shoot me.

The Foo Fighters have never been my favorite band because almost every album they release has too much filler but they do have some really great songs and I hope I get to weasel my way into one of these shows. On Saturday night Mission of Burma (if you can’t understand the Foo just forget it) and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones open. Sunday night will feature the other Boston band people know, the Dropkick Murphys, as well as Royal Blood.

Meanwhile elsewhere in Boston..

7/16

The Gin Blossoms @ Boston Common – The Gin Blossoms are playing a free concert at Boston Common! Hey Jealousy, I wish I wasn’t already going to see Billy Joel….Yeah, I’ll see myself out.

7/17

Kacey Musgraves @ Boston Common – The beautiful country trailblazer (too strong?) plays a free show at Boston Common the next night as part of the Outside the Box Festival. Madness!

Shelley King @Johnny D’s Somerville – King brings her soulful brand of blues and gospel to Massachusetts. Tickets are not free but only cost only $10.

If you like Ska…

Catch 22 @ The Brighton Music Hall or The Slackers doing their thing on a cruise boat in Boston Harbor. Weird, I know.

7/18

Earthfest featuring Guster @ The HatchShell Boston – What kind of 90’s fucking weekend is happening in Boston right now? Other bands scheduled to perform are New Politics who look like every young person you hate and sound like every commercial you hate more. Atlas Genius are an Australian band that Dave Grohl would fucking despise, and Alex Preston is the guy that your girlfriend has probably fallen in love with and apparently was a finalist on American Idol. Hmmmm. But, hey, it’s free too!

7/19

Great Caeasar @ Great Scott Allston – I don’t know much about this band but here’s one of there videos which is a polite middle finger to conservative America.
